Billable Hours

Watch Full Episodes exclusive to showcase.ca

At a big Bay Street law firm in a downtown Toronto office tower, a group of over-educated twenty-somethings are discovering what you can’t learn watching Ally McBeal or The Practice: Being a lawyer sucks. 90+% of law is corporate law. And 90+% of corporate law is mind-numbing paperwork. Young attorneys are expected to endure 85-90 hour work-weeks, 50-51 weeks a year - for the rest of what used to be their lives.

Welcome to the world of Billable Hours. They’re smart, they’re trapped and they’re really bored. So what happens when a group of hyper-intelligent young professionals are stuck in an excruciatingly mundane work environment for 95% of their waking hours? Well, quite simply, they focus their extraneous brainpower on other things. Really - stupid - things.

Instead of wondering what else they could do with their lives, they compare the number of floor tiles with the number of squares in the carpet design. They see how many pencils they can stick to the ceiling and, subsequently, the rate at which they’ll fall.

Until recently, our heroes thought climbing the corporate ladder was the thing to do, but it’s starting to be way too much work. And all to get the opportunity to, well... do more work. Kinda like a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie.

No, these young up-starts would rather compete for the best time in the Seinfeld match-game or try to perfect the art of one-handed phone chord un-twisting. Life’s big picture is so complicated - why the hell should they get all depressed thinking about where they’re headed? There will be plenty of time to think when they’re dead. Or better yet, fired.
