This week's episode opens the best way possible - with the spontaneous combustion of a little old lady. Hale and Dyson are brought in to investigate, but Hale is quickly taken off the case. The victim was the head of one of the three Noble Fae clans, of which Hale's family is a member, so it's a total conflict of interest.
Speaking of the Noble Faes, there just so happens to be a meeting of the families coming up the very next night. Hale, ever the smooth operator, convinces Kenzi to pose as his girlfriend in order to impress his father Sturgess and his sister Val, and sets up a get-together with his family, Kenzi, Bo, and Dyson before the big event.
Unfortunately, we quickly learn something about Hale's family: they hate humans, even particularly awesome humans like Kenzi. As the evening unfolds it becomes quite clear that Hale would have been better off just showing up single...and to make matters worse, Nate isn't exactly a huge fan of Hale and Kenzi being together, even if it's a ruse. On the plus side (well, maybe not for Hale and Dyson's friendship), at least Val is happy, as she clearly has a thing for Dyson.
Later, Bo, Kenzi, and Trick meet the head of one of the other noble clans, but - wouldn't you know it - he spontaneously combusts too. Trick figures that a Cherufe is behind the attacks, which have now killed two of the three clan heads. The only one left is Hale's father...could he be behind the attacks? Spoiler alert: maybe.
Enter Lauren and her sidekick Nadia, who, by the way, Lauren doesn't seem to want around as much as she is. Lauren gives Bo a quick Cherufe history lesson, revealing that such a creature was behind the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which wiped out Pompeii.
Soon after, Bo sneaks into Hale's father's house and finds a secret room full of secret secrets. With everything about to be revealed anyway, Sturgess gives a history lesson of his own, telling Bo that there used to be a fourth Noble clan, one that was more powerful than all of the other families combined. Desperate for more power, the three weaker families hired the Cherufe to eliminate the fourth (who lived in Pompeii...would you look at that), agreeing to hand over their first born girl every hundred years. But, they reneged on their deal from the start (hence Hale's sister still being around) and the Cherufe is now out for revenge.
That's all well and good, but as you may recall from high school history class (full disclosure: I did not and had to look it up on Wikipedia), Pompeii was destroyed almost 2,000 years ago in 79 AD. If the three remaining clans double-crossed the Cherufe from the outset, what took so long for it to get around to burning people up? I could tell you, but it would be lot more fun to watch it than to read about it. Plus, there are more developments with Dyson, Kenzi, and Lauren's love lives (always a hot topic in the comments and on our Facebook page), so you're going to want to check this episode out:
