'Misfits' Season 3, Episode 2 - Gender Bending

Thursday, January 19, 2012 5:29 PM

In the latest episode of Misfits, we see Curtis getting in touch with his feminine side … literally! He misses running so desperately that he decides to use his new power to become his female alter ego, Melissa - or Mel for short - so that he can join a training class at the community centre. I predicted that this could lead to trouble, and was I ever right! But Curtis' identity crisis ends up leading to him being more certain of himself than ever.

Curtis morphs into Mel and joins the athletics program. She/he meets a fellow runner, Emma, who later turns up at the bar where Curtis works. She's initially thrilled to meet the former track star, but soon learns that he's self-centred and negative. Next time that Emma and Mel are at training, Emma mentions that she hooked up with Curtis and that she threw him a "pity shag". She adds that Curtis is a lousy lover, not realizing that Mel is in fact Curtis. Not convinced by Emma's version of events, Curtis goes to Alicia and asks her opinion. She pretty much confirms that Emma is right. Curtis turns into Mel and "explores" this female body, which works to his benefit when Mel ends up with Emma. Curtis also starts seeing how men treat women through Mel's eyes - Mel is subjected to lewd advances by the lecherous probation officer … and even Rudy! When the athletics coach starts showing an interest in Mel, things veer into darker territory. Simon is the first to see Curtis as Mel, and she/he asks Simon not to tell anyone who his alter ego is, or that she/he is running again. This leads to some interesting situations, like Kelly catching Simon zipping up Mel's dress.

Speaking of Kelly, it seems that the chemistry I detected between her and Seth - "Mr. Power Broker" - is dead on. Seth's car breaks down and Kelly uses her rocket scientist skills to fix it. He tells her that he owes her and she asks for a new power, which he scoffs at. Later on, we see Kelly and Alicia following Seth, and Alicia calls Kelly out on having feelings for Seth. He leads them to a cemetery, and once he's gone, the girls check out the headstone he visited - it's someone by the name of Shannon Speers. Here's hoping more is revealed about Seth soon.

Back to the A plot … Emma and Mel head out for an night out dancing with disastrous results when the coach drugs Mel's drink and hopes to take advantage of her while under the influence. Mel ends up at the community centre where Rudy tries to get intimate with her, but Mel thinks that it's Emma. At that point, Emma walks in on the scene and quickly storms out. Mel tries to leave the community centre, and that's when the coach comes to Mel's "rescue". He's about to take advantage of her in the back of a car when - SURPRISE! - Mel morphs back into Curtis.

Once Curtis is at home, an angry Emma shows up at his door. She has the idea that she's going to get revenge on Mel by sleeping with Curtis, but then discovers a dress that she loaned Mel. Emma concludes that Mel must be involved with Curtis and storms out.

The next day, Kelly confronts Mel and accuses her of trying to move in on Simon AND having something with Curtis. Mel rushes out of the locker room following an awkward moment, and Simon tells the gang that Mel is really Curtis.

Curtis goes to see Emma and finds out she's gone for a drink with the coach, and sure enough, we see that the scumbag is trying to do the same thing to her that he attempted with Mel. Curtis comes to Emma's rescue in the nick of time, beats up the coach and nurses Emma through the ordeal. When Emma wakes up and finds out exactly what happened, Curtis confesses to her that neither he nor Mel was cheating, and then reveals his secret. Emma admits that it sounds insane, but she's calm about it all. Curtis confides in her that he did it because it was the only way he could experience that feeling of running again, and apologizes for hurting her. He decides that nothing is worth the ordeal they've just been through. Oh, and they both make sure that the coach pays for his actions.

Even though things treaded on a darker track for much of this episode, it ended on a very hopeful note for Curtis. After he reveals his secret to Emma, he realizes that it's time to move on from his past. He needs to find something else that makes him feel as good as running used to feel for him. He's learned a valuable lesson and from that, he gets some much needed closure. What exactly he'll be moving on to isn't spelled out, but it looks like part of it involves a relationship with Emma.

Now, I am very excited for tonight's episode - we get a Simon-centric story which includes the return of a certain masked hero! In a recent conversation that I had with Simon himself, Iwan Rheon, he mentioned that this was the episode that he's most excited for us to see: "Episode 3 is very much about Simon's story. You get some real insight into him." You won't want to miss this one … and I'll have my complete interview with Iwan right here for you Misfits fans real soon!
