This week we've got the first looks at Ridley Scott's latest sci-fi film, Prometheus, the real-time horror flick Silent House, and a trailer for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Prometheus
This goes against everything Hollywood has stood for lately, but someone has decided not to make a sequel or a reboot in favour of coming up with something original. Ridley Scott was originally working on a prequel to Alien, but eventually decided to abandon that project (possibly because it collapsed under the weight of its own magnificence) and began working on a film called Prometheus. Taking place in the late 21st Century, the film follows the crew of a spaceship that find evidence of the origins of humanity on a alien planet. Noomi Rapace (of the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame) and Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Shame) star.
Silent House
Elizabeth Olsen (i.e. the Olsen who isn't one of the twins) plays one-half of a father-daughter team who gets trapped in a dilapidated lake house by a bunch of madmen. Sounds pretty cliché for sure, except that the filmmakers claim that the entire film was captured in one take will all events happening in real-time. Olsen was one of the breakout stars of Sundance last year (for Martha Marcy May Marlene), and the real-time angle seems like a good idea for a thriller, so this could be one to watch out for for horror fans.
The Oscars
You may or not recall, but last year's Oscars were somewhat of a flop, with heavy criticism directed towards Anne Hathaway and especially Mr. James Franco for their lackluster hosting performances. To spice things up this year, the organizers of the awards hired Brett Ratner to produce and Eddie Murphy to host. But then Ratner was forced out after using a gay slur during rehearsals and Murphy quit soon after (hopefully to focus on reviving his once-stellar music career), so the organizers gave up and hired Billy Crystal again. Here's how it went down:
