Trailer Watch: The Grey, The Lorax, Cabin in the Woods, and The Three Stooges

Thursday, December 08, 2011 11:46 AM

It's that time again for our look at the new trailers of the week.  In this edition we've got Liam Neeson in The Grey, Danny DeVito as The Lorax, Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods, and the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges.  If you happen to prefer watching full movies rather that 2-minute previews, make sure to check back tomorrow for a round-up of the movies we'll have this weekend on Showcase.

The Grey
One of the most unexpected surprises of late is Liam Neeson's career revival as a go-to action star.  Taken was outstanding, and Unknown (apart from January Jones' inability to act) was good as well. His latest effort is The Grey, in which he's part of a group of oilmen who get stranded in the frigid Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. Humans have proven to be no match for Neeson in the past, so this time he's taking on a pack of ravenous wolves. Count me in.

The Lorax
Based on the book by Dr. Suess, The Lorax stars Danny DeVito (or his voice anyway) as the titular character. The Lorax is short, round, and "grumpy yet charming"...it's basically the part DeVito was born to play with the bonus addition of a totally sweet Wilford Brimley 'stache. You probably know the general story from the book, but if not it's an environmental  cautionary tale that follows Ted (Zac Efron), who among other things is trying to save seemingly extinct trees using the last seed available. Four word summary: trees good, industry bad. The fine people at Fox News recently called The Muppets communists and claimed that the film was further evidence of Hollywood brainwashing children with their liberal agenda, so I can't wait to hear what they about this one.

The Cabin in the Woods
Lately Joss Whedon can do wrong, and fanboys everywhere are hoping that The Cabin in the Woods continues his streak.  The film was actually completed was in 2009 and was originally set for a February 2010 release, but MGM's financial difficulties prevented it from being released until now. The premise has been done about a thousand times (a group of friends get stuck in a creepy cabin), but at least there's a sci-fi element to it.  It's probably the type of film that'll be judged solely by how good its twist ending is, but - since M. Night Shyamalan had nothing to do with it - at this point I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

The Three Stooges
Looks like you can probably file this one in the 'What were they thinking?' category.  Despite nobody on  the planet asking for it, the Farrelly Brothers have made a Three Stooges movie.  Here's the gist of the trailer: the Stooges hit each other and get poked in the eye repeatedly.  And then Snooki shows up...all right, I'm done.
