The eve of a new series premiere is always a momentous occasion here at Showcase HQ, and tonight's debuts hold special significance.
Not only because they mark the return of Spencer Rice of Kenny vs. Spenny to Showcase airwaves, or because they mark the debut of the hilarious Belleville Brothers' first collaborative TV project Almost Heroes -- though both of those events are cause for celebration -- but because it's been some time since we've launched any new half-hour comedy series, let alone two at once. So, naturally, we had to give it a name: Comedy Thursday.
Leading the block out of the gate is Almost Heroes at 9pm ET/PT. When seemingly slick and together Terry (Paul Campbell) returns from Harvard business
school for his father’s funeral, he expects it to be a quick trip down
memory lane. But when he discovers the family comic book store is
almost bankrupt, and he’s to blame, things get more complicated. His
head-in-the-clouds brother Peter (Ryan Belleville) is going to lose the store without
help, and as far apart as they’ve grown, Terry can’t abandon his
brother when he needs him most.
Stay with us at 9:30pm ET/PT for Single White Spenny. Replacing his search for dignity with a search for true love, Canadian comedy favourite Spencer Rice (Kenny vs. Spenny) returns to Showcase with what can best be described as a comedy of relationship errors. Spenny struggles to find love, be loved, get love, rent love, buy
love, steal love, melt love and sell love. From trying his hand at an
open relationship to seeking motherly love that was lacking from his
real Mom, Spenny navigates single life with an ineptitude all his own.
Tomorrow (Friday), we'll have the first Single White Spenny Spenisode live on the site -- so check back here in the morning for a glimpse of life behind-the-scenes on the show. And once that's fully digested, subscribe to the Showcase Showcast for the first of eight weekly podcasts hosted by members of the Almost Heroes cast and creative team -- Jason Belleville, Ryan Belleville, Paul Campbell, and Colin Mochrie. We'll have new installments of both the Spenisodes and the podcast every Friday.
Finally, after our new original series premiere tonight, we're bringing back two old Showcase favourites -- Curb Your Enthusiasm (the Seinfeld season!) and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. So get ready to laugh tonight -- and every Thursday night -- for the foreseeable future, right here on Showcase.
