What's that? A bit of self promotion? Damn straight.
There's really no doubt about what's going to top the box office this weekend. It's be the James Cameron produced, 3D cave exploration adventure Sanctum. It's big, it's splashy, it's well made and it appeals to a broad demographic. Plus it's on virtually every screen in the country. So. Yeah. You could go see that. You'd probably even enjoy it. Or ...
If you happen to be in Toronto on Saturday and you're free at 2pm you could come to the TIFF Bell Lightbox where we're kicking off a nine week long Saturday matinee screening series of the best 1980s kids scifi / fantasy / horror / adventure films with one of the all time greats. It's The Goonies on the big screen, projected from 35mm, the way it was meant to be seen.
This is one of the all time great geek films, one that made an entire generation of kids believe there may be pirate treasure hidden under their homes while also teaching them the Truffle Shuffle. And it's also a film that a huge number of people discovered on video and have never had the chance to see on the big screen. We're fixing that.
To sweeten the pot a bit, Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative is creating ultra limited edition poster art for each of the films in the series - ultra limited meaning ten copies only - and we'll be giving three of them away in the theatre before the screening. You can take a look at the Goonies poster here.
Later films in the series include Gremlins, Back To The Future, The Last Starfighter, The Princess Bride and more. You can find the entire list here.
