Drop Dead Diva - S02E05 - "Senti-Mental Journey" Blog

There are many things I could discuss from this week's episode, but you know what’s got me talking? Elaine Bingum, when she compliments Jane for wearing her “colours.” Elaine says to Jane: “You know you’re a winter right?” This identifying of one’s “season” was what I heard non-stop growing up. Let me explain.

Both Elaine and my mother, along with many women in the 1980s, were influenced by Colour Me Beautiful – a book that helps guide women to which colours look best on them based on their skin tones. This popular book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 7 years! As a result, myself, and I’d assume many others, have been told what colours they should wear based on their season since childhood.

Growing up, my mother reaffirmed to my sister and I that I was an “autumn” and my sister a “winter.” It means that as an autumn I look better in gold than silver, orange or rusty red tones and brown over sharp colours like black.

Looking at the methodology behind Colour Me Beautiful, I admit it seems to make sense. Or, have I simply been cosmetically brainwashed? This thought got to me after nearly two decades of being told repeatedly what colours I should wear. It all seemed so ‘80s, and so I rebelled. Call the fashion police! I sinfully wore black, reds and silver, and felt great wearing winter colours. According to my mother, however, I could get away with non-autumn colours, because as she says: “You’re so gorgeous you can wear anything.” I have to give my mom praise for always telling me I was beautiful growing up, ‘twas a good dose of daily confidence.

Now, post my colour rebellion, I still gravitate towards warmer tones and orange has always remained my favourite colour. But loving both my winter and autumn colours, I wanted to know if my mom was right all those years. To make an executive decision I went to the Colour Me Beautiful website and took their quickie test. Turns out mom was right, I’m an autumn.

I thought my mom was the only one who cared about "seasons" -- yet that moment between Jane and her mother at the beginning of this episode proved me wrong. Watching it felt like the writers were just at my family dinner and rewrote parts of the dialogue into their script. I think it's safe to assume then that the writers grew up or were influenced by this colour wave in cosmetics as well.

As much as I begged my mom to stop telling me what my season was, I now catch myself saying to my friends: “You look so good in that shade of pink, you’re a summer you know.”

So in this diva’s life, it would appear the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. (Make that a rusty coloured apple in my case, perhaps a Gala or McIntosh.)

Until next time, ta ta divas!

P.S. Watch this week's episode, if you haven't already! Did you grow up in the Colour Me Beautiful era too? Share in the comments below.
