Drop Dead Diva is back! After last season's stunner of a season finale, I was anxiously awaiting Season 2 and am happy to report the premiere episode did not disappoint. The episode definitely took a quarter note and a half into the direction of musical theatre - no doubt tearing a page from the Glee playbook with its opening scene. But Brooke Elliott (Jane) is no stranger to dancing and singing, what with her Broadway background, and what could have been a risky opening sequence wound up being a great showcase for some of her lesser-seen talents. (To say nothing of the cameo by Paula Abdul and her long-dormant dancing legs, which brought back some serious childhood memories.) Seeing Grayson in an officer’s uniform was a little strange... yet, admittedly, a little sexy. And it's Jane's dream, so anything goes!
Dream sequence aside, DDD has me hooked again with its plot twists and "ghosts" from Jane's past which continue to pop up. I also love watching her work in court, which can sway the mood from laughter to tears in the blink of a commercial.
The all-star cast of fine men doesn't hurt either. I love that Fred has returned. Am I the only one waiting and hoping he gets true happiness with Stacy? The writers are taking their sweet time making that one happen, presumably to keep us hooked, and also to allow him to work on more important things. You know, like helping Jane remember she was once married.
All this said, I'm eager to watch what will happen this season! Will Grayson ever one day see through the Jane exterior to realize this person is in fact Deb? Will they bring a romantic flame or twist into Teri Lee’s life? Will Jane and Tony continue to cool their jets or dive into a passionate affair?
What I do know is that I'll definitely be grabbing a cocktail and sitting down to watch the next episode to see where this season takes us.
Until next time, ta ta Divas.
