Just like last week, there is no mystery at all as to which film is going to win the box office this weekend. And, once again, the winner will be decided not based on quality or lack thereof but on the overwhelming fear of studios to go against the reigning powers of the Hallowe'en season. Last week Paranormal Activity 2 was the only film to go into wide release and - no surprise - it dominated the box office easily. And it's the same scenario this week with Saw 3D being the only film going out in wide release. And, you know, it is what it is. And what it is is a whole lot of people being killed in inventive ways -- the only difference this time being that the blood is going to come spraying out of the screen towards you. The producers know what they've got, too, and to remind all of us they've just released this video featuring the best kill moments from the previous entries in the series.
But fear not! Saw 3D is not your only option! If you happen to be here in Toronto there's a host of Halloween themed programming at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and for those who want something entirely different there are a number of films - Tamara Drewe and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest prime among them - hitting limited release this week. But, really, if what you're after is a bit of counter-programming, then get out and hit your local theater tonight for TRON Night!
A free, first-come-first-served event to promote the upcoming Tron Legacy, those lucky enough to get in will be treated to a twenty minute preview of the film in 3D. And I do mean treated. I was lucky enough to see a very early preview of 3D footage from the film around a year ago now and it looks and sounds fantastic. And I bring up the sound because Daft Punk did the score, which was a pretty brilliant move. You can check out their music video for the film below. If you want to get in on this - and you should - ticketing info is available online here.
