Hello, Seattle! As the Newmans work on being “normal” we find out that their moral stance on picket lines are a little loose -- and, just like the Botwins, they are very opportunistic. The hospitality biz is a far cry from the drug trade, but given the circumstances it'll have to do.
Even still, things aren't all they're cracked up to be at the Newmans' new gig. "Randy" (Andy) tries to win over the head chef, "Mike" (Silas) reads chose your own adventure books for $50 a page in his underwear to an eccentric guest, and "Nathalie" (Nancy) deals with some messy situations. (Hey, is that ugly naked guy of Friends fame?)
Meanwhile, "Shaun" (Shane) is in charge of day care for little Stevie – and I must say, he wouldn’t be my first choice as caregiver given the whole cold-blooded murderer situation. Sometimes in a recession I guess you have to take what you can get. (Kinda like "Shaun", who can now add petty theft to his growing rap sheet after swiping a stroller.)
Happily, the Newmans have found a line of work that better suits their situation -- instead of growing weed, they're making hash! The more things change, the more they stay the same. And with the return of Doug this week, we can only hope that our favourite stoner accountant brings back some of those great memories of seasons past. Hopefully without Cesar.
A few observations:
This episode was chock full of guest stars! Hotel manager Patrick Fischler, for one -- you may remember his stint on Mad Men as comic Jimmy Barrett, the one who spilled the beans to Betty about Don Draper and his wife’s affair... Pete Stormare has traded in a wood chipper from his Fargo days for a cheese grater as head chef. Linda Hamilton used to fight Terminators and now is a free-spirited grower... And was that Sugar from YTV as her daughter? Also, Michael Kostroff played the pathetic high-end stroller salesman -- a far cry from his lawyerly duties to the best gangs in The Wire.
