Weeds S06E02 RECAP: "Felling and Swamping"

Monday, September 13, 2010 8:30 AM

As the Botwins continue their spirited Thelma and Louise-esque road trip, they decide to keep heading north. Destination: Canada, of course! But before reaching the border, the Botwins max out their credit cards at a superstore and then dump them altogether. On that note, who knew that Hooters gift cards were legal tender? Are the wings really that good? Can anyone confirm?

After the shopping spree, Andy -- the self-proclaimed “king of living off the grid” -- teaches the clan what they need to do. Step 1: Kill your old identity. Step 2: Establish a new identity. (Students and alumni of the University of Andy should take notes on this impromptu lesson.)

And just like that, the Botwins are dead -- long live the Newmans.

The new identity ruse also gives the writers an opportunity to tell us what Weeds fans already suspected about the fate of Celia, who is mentioned by name as someone with whom the, er, Newmans will need to sever ties. We'll miss her -- may she continue to make her fortune hawking  “You’re Pretty” make-up.

So, Canada jokes abound as the family rambles up toward the border -- perhaps taking a page from the How I Met Your Mother rulebook -- and spankings abound, too, as Shane fails to show remorse for killing Pilar. Parental punishment aside, this is not a normal mother-son relationship, and one begins to wonder if these people can ever find true satisfaction, regardless of where they wind up.

First things first: Andy's second rule. Nancy becomes Nathalie, Andy becomes Randy (!), Shane lands on Shaun, and Silas picks the conventional Mike.

Next up for the newly minted Newmans: finding jobs.
