IN THEATRES: A Humble Valentine's Week Suggestion To Cinema Owners

Thursday, February 11, 2010 9:00 AM

Dear Mister and Missus Cineplex. This Valentine's Day why not do something unexpected? Instead of the typical 'romance in one room / scares in the other' why not put both in one? Haul a second projector into the booth and instead of running sap-o-matic Valentine's Day and troubled horror re-do The Wolfman on separate screens go ahead and play both simultaneously. That way when The Wolfman does the expected and proves more painful to audiences than characters on screen -- the big budget, big star flick has been kept fastidiously away from the eyes of the press, never a good sign -- we can at least thrill to the sight of Benicio del Toro stalking Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift and Jessia Biel across the screen.  As for Valentine's Day... well, the savaging it would receive from ol' wolfie would probably be less severe than the one handed out in advance reviews.

Strange but, true... In this week's clash of big stars, the winner -- at least in terms of quality -- will likely be neither Julia nor Benicio but young Logan Lerman. The title character in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Lerman has the misfortune of anchoring a film with a ludicrously long and awkward title roundly written off as a Harry Potter knock off but it looks to be the only competent picture of the three.

So... kind of a dodgy release week. Guess I'll have to console myself with the fact that this coming Wednesday I'll be able to comfort myself with two whopping hours of Celine Dion documentary. Shudder. Now there's horror ...
