On Monday, we alluded to a major announcement that would come later in the week and opened the floor to guesses as to what the big news might be. Most of you guessed that it had something to do with next Friday's premiere of Kenny vs. Spenny Season 6, which is wrong, and also strange since we announced that months ago and it's no longer a surprise. But we understand that you're excited, and that's nice. We're excited too.
The reason we've assembled you all here today, though, is to to tell you that Showcase has officially greenlit The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Funtime Hour, a narrative sketch comedy show starring Mike Smith, Robb Wells and JP Tremblay, also known as Bubbles, Ricky, and Julian from the hit Showcase series Trailer Park Boys. The new series will debut in Fall 2010.
The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Funtime Hour opens as the boys 'wake up' after shooting has wrapped on their new TV series -- a children's show called The Happy Funtime Hour (stay with me here), filmed in the sleepy town of Port Cockerton. The production goes off without a hitch until RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson, hired to play a German scientist who teaches kids about nutrition, takes his role too seriously and assumes the personality of his character before turning evil and going on to synthesize and distribute a hallucinogenic drug from local blueberries.
In Drunk and on Drugs, the boys take creative cues from BBC's bizarro comedy The League of Gentlemen as well as elder statesmen Monty Python by rotating between innovative costumes and make-up to look the part of a host of different characters, including deranged pirates, playboys from a 1980s television show, and a trio of bumbling superheroes.
We'll have a trailer, exclusive footage and images from the show over the coming months, so stay close to showcase.ca for the latest (and join us on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to keep on top of things). In the meantime, hear all about it from the boys themselves in this video.
