On the Origin of Showcase

Monday, August 31, 2009 3:00 PM

Today, we say farewell to the Sideshow blog and its mysterious inhabitants, and welcome a new elite group of writers, critics, scholars, and experts to the showcase.ca family.

You may have noticed that we look a bit different, too, and that’s no coincidence: Showcase is evolving into the premier destination for big, bold series and movies. Don’t fret – your stories are still here, including Weeds, Rescue Me, Curb Your Enthusiasm, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Kenny vs. Spenny, Trailer Park Boys, and all the rest, but you’ll be seeing many more big-ticket movie titles and big name dramas like House and NCIS rounding out the prime time schedule.

We’re also excited to launch our most diverse original production slate ever, with series such as The Foundation, Pure Pwnage, Cra$h & Burn, and Lost Girl all set to premiere in the coming months. To say we’re looking forward to bringing these shows to you would be an understatement – we know you’ll love ‘em.

So, what does all that mean for the Showcase blog? For one, it means that this is where you need to be for daily coverage of last night’s shows, insight into the world of TV and film, exclusive Showcase-related videos and news stories, and other things designed expressly to titillate your entertainment-loving self. But seeing as how we’re evolving and all, we thought we’d also take this opportunity to work in some great new features, including weekly prizes, more big interviews, and loads more to read and watch each and every weekday.

Do stay tuned.

Not impressed, and thinking I might need to find a new favourite channel. What's up with all the scheduled infomercials? where's my nightly movie? This is all very disturbing, indeed.

As long as showcase keeps on airing quality original programming, and programming that I can't get in canada (Always Sunny in Philladelphia) I will be happy, I do miss Fridays Without Borders though.

Don't care for the new logo. I don't see it as a logo for a channel that is a "...premier destination for big, bold series and movies." The previous one did. A font change maybe could've been done. But it is a logo, doesn't really matter.

Great to hear It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be back on Showcase. It hasn't aired since early 2008 and the fourth season that aired on FX last fall still hasn't aired. Are you going to air an hour of Always Sunny and air season four followed by the fifth season that is about to start?

Does look like Global just shoved a bunch of their top rated dramas into the Showcase schedule along with a bunch of superhero movies.

As long as the FX and HBO original programs will air I'll tune in and check out Showcase original programs as well.

New look is absolutely dreadful. The logo looks like something from a bad 1980's B movie production studio. Especially the rotating logo that's been on the front of some of your promos - dreadful. Looks like it took 30 seconds in After Effects.

You'd think for a TV station that broadcasts 80% tv shows / movies that it doesn't even produce itself, it would have the cash on hand to get a better logo and website design.

Cmon - orange, peach, yellow and white text over top of purple and black? White menu bars with silver gradient? What were you thinking? Lol.

Have you guys even looked at the Showtime, HBO, and FX websites? The old site looked 1000 times better than this, and that was even dated looking.
