It seems like yesterday that Sacha Baron Cohen bestowed Borat upon an unsuspecting world. Sure, the attentive few had seen him in segments on Da Ali G Show, which aired here on Showcase for years, but the character had never been fully realized until his eponymous mock-doc, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, hit theatres all over the world (except for most Arab countries and, you know, Kazakhstan) back in 2006.
Expectations for the film were huge, and happily, it delivered. Borat turned out to be as hilarious as everybody had hoped. Unfortunately, Borat’s massive popularity helped integrate phrases such as “I like!” and "is nice" and “sexytime” into the popular lexicon, turning him into a post-millennial Austin Powers. And in this modern age, in which every waking moment of everybody’s life is recorded, we can look at a flood of forensic evidence to support that thesis. Here, we’ve compiled some of the most cringe-worthy Borat impressions that were, inexplicably, posted online.
Our reasons for assembling this horrific collection are twofold. First of all, with Brüno looming, it’s everyone’s responsibility to spread awareness in an attempt to limit this type of behaviour in the future. Secondly, the cable premiere of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan comes to Showcase on Saturday, May 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and it’s important that you watch it again, or for the first time, to remember just why this excellent film caught on the way it did. Sacha Baron Cohen is hilarious and whip-smart, and Borat holds up a lot better than these impressions would have you believe.
Spoiler alert: You're about to be really embarrassed for other people.
