Damages S02E12: "Look What I Dug Up This Time"

Monday, April 06, 2009 11:53 AM

Oh, l'amour. Patty Hewes and Phil Grey always seemed like a couple whose union was more of a business arrangement than one of deep love and trust, so it doesn’t come as too great a shock to see it all come apart in a blaze of ceramic shrapnel and threats of legal repercussions. Back when we learned that Patty’s son was sired by Daniel Purcell, and that she ranked him as her “one that got away” (not in so many words, but close enough), the end had already seemed nigh. We’ll see how this resolves, but see-you-in-court threats notwithstanding, I’d imagine these two locked down a pretty solid prenup before saying "I Do".

It was Purcell who brought about the other major revelation of this week’s episode, as he revealed to the NYPD that he is indeed directly responsible for his wife’s murder. Or at least, he thinks he is—Darrell Hammond, it seems, finished the job. Not that it matters; Purcell’s inner monster did most of the damage, and now that he’s come clean, he finally has nothing to lose and can supply all of his damning evidence in the case against Ultima. (By the way, how about that Dante’s Inferno recitation on the phone with Kendrick? Creepy.)

Also, as has been foreseen in previous alternate timelines, Tom Shayes has finally defected—in real time—onto Team Ellen after being fired by Patty for insubordination (read: unwillingness to do illegal things at Patty’s behest). Oh, and congrats on the new baby, Tommy. From everyone here at Showcase.

The fuse is lit for a dynamite finale next week, which will (hopefully) resolve all of the dangling loose ends that were let loose 13 weeks ago. Tune in, and be sure to visit the Damages blog to talk about how it made you feel.

As always, if you're behind on your Damages, you can catch up at the Showcase video centre.
