Comstock Films does sex for real

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 2:40 PM

Happy post-Valentine's Day, everyone, I hope that no matter your Facebook relationship status, you had a weekend full of contemplating the frontiers of love.

Here's my second post on the topic, about a real-life couple who muse on the subject themselves. Tony and Peggy Comstock are a husband-and-wife team who, for the past 13 yeras, have focused their lens on the erotic pursuits of actual lovers.

Wanting to play with the boundaries between love, sex, documentary, art and pornography, the Comstocks find real couples who are willing to go on camera to first, dish about their initial hookups and how their daily up and downs have affected their physical intimacy, before allowing the Comstocks into their bedroom to film them getting it on.

The series, which includes couples of various ages, sexual orientations and ethnicities, is perfect for viewers who are turned off by the matchy-matchy bodies in most mainstream porn.

But the films aren't instantly titillating either. Despite the fact that the screen is filled with naked bodies and thrusting units, the movies are, in some ways, more sweet than erotic. The couples dish about how money, family, health and real life have caused their sex life to wax and wane: by the time the money shot comes at the end of the hour of "Matt and Khym: Better than Ever," I wasn't turned on so much as filled with a fuzzy glow, happy that love is still alive.
