Damages S02E02: "Burn It, Shred It, I Don't Care"

Monday, January 26, 2009 2:38 PM

Before we get on to the spoiler portion of this post, I’d like to extend a warm, Showcase welcome to Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden, who made her Damages debut this week as Claire Maddox, the brassy, already-up-to-no-good lawyer employed by Daniel Purcell’s boss. Marcia, welcome. We broadcast your show in Canada.

With the arrival of this new character comes heaps more trouble, which should come as no surprise to longtime viewers of the show. (Think: When was the last time a new character on this show didn’t cause trouble?) This week, in fact, even characters that have always seemed pure and focused are showing their flaws. Would anyone have guessed that the curiously helpful Wes would have a creepy shrine to Arthur Frobisher in his gun closet? Or, more to the point, would the Ellen of yore have sold out her friend and colleague Tom to the FBI in a careless fit of misguided anger? Indeed, this week, we learned that everyone has a callous streak, and nobody—but nobody—can be trusted.

We also learn, in the twist of the season so far, that Daniel and Claire have been seeing one another romantically, which adds a crucial layer to last week’s murder of Daniel’s wife. Come to think of it, he didn’t seem all that bummed at the crime scene, did he? His getting-it-on-the-side situation with Claire might explain that. So might the episode-ending glimpse of the suspicious widower burning some (probably important) documents. What’s the story, Mr. Purcell? We’ll be watching you.

It likely comes as no surprise to anyone that Ellen is sleeping with Wes, but that’s been officially established this week as well. And we still don’t know who Ellen is firing at. Still taking bets—let’s hear ‘em!

As always, you can get your Damages fix online, at our Video page.
