Looking for an indoor sport this winter? If you haven't noticed, the past few years have seen a serious revival of all things domestic and girlie, with old-school hobbies like quilting and knitting being resurrected with a 21st century twist. I've been slightly behind the curve as per I suck at crafts, having zero patience for fiddling with needles and thread. But oh, how I've longed to join my stitchy sisters.
So when I stumbled across
Crotch Stitch while trawling
Etsy one day, I knew I had found my crafty project. I mean,
look at these things! Have you ever seen such a
perfect merger of the lecherous with the demure? This ain't Laura Ingalls cross-stitch pattern. No, it's the genius of Leah Woodworth, a Michigan-dwelling mother of five (this is a woman who practices what she preaches). I had a quick phone chat with Woodworth about her work the other day: born in England, she's got a crisp accent that's extra delicious when she talks about her "naughty" patterns.
Q: So how long have you been cross-stitching?
A: I guess about 17 years. I started when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was doing samples for a company in Utah called Vanessa Ann's. It was money based, it wasn't a cutesy thing.
Q: What were the first patterns that you designed for yourself?
A: Well, as I progressed, I could never find any patterns that I really liked. As you can see from my
other Etsy store, I'm really into close ups of flowers. So my first patterns were of flowers. They mainly adorn the bathrooms of family members.
Q: And when did you get into the sexy patterns?
A: Not too long ago. I had a pregnant friend who was feeling hormonally sexy, so she asked if I could do a pattern of a naked guy. When I did, she thought it was awesome. She'd be doing the cross-stitching waiting for an appointment at the ob-gyn.
Then, I suddenly thought, there isn't anything else that I can find like this. So I decided to test it out on Etsy and there's definitely a market. There's a huge potential.
Q: How do you get your ideas?
A: Well, it sounds a bit naughty really, but I found a sex message board where people were quite willing to send me pictures. I literally have a box with thousands of pictures that people want me to try out. Sometimes I will do custom projects for people as well—I just did a custom image of a couple, for the lady's birthday. But I do have small children around, so I have to keep those images away from them during the daytime.
Q: Which are the most popular?
A: In terms of views, the male patterns are looked at more than the naked ladies. On Etsy, it's mainly women who sell and buy.
Q: Where do you think people put these up?
A: Well, for example, I would put one up in the master bedroom. Maybe not something with an
erect penis, but one of the
nudes would be quite fine. A lot of my buyers must be single women. Sometimes I do wonder, 'where are they going to put
this?'
Q: What did your husband think when you started working on these?
A: He thought it was hilarious. And he has tons of ideas in his head too.
Q: Do you use a computer program to design the pattern?
A: Yes, I've been using a program called PC Stitch for years and years. I draw the images and then it converts it into a pattern.
Q: Have you ever got negative comments on your Etsy page?
A: Yes, I do, regularly. I've been called immoral and disgusting and been told I'm going to hell. I take them as it comes. I put up as many warning as I can, and there is nothing explicit on the first page. If people are clicking through on pictures with those names, I think they have a pretty good indication of what they're going to see.
The first time, it was a stab to the heart. Now, it rolls off my back. Life is way too short. This is a fun shop that's not meant to be taken seriously. And I have a big fan base. I get a lot of comments like "this is so cool," or "wow, I can't believe this is cross stitch!"
