Hey Blog-Fans!
When’s the last time you rocked out to 800 songs at the same time? Probably last night, in your dreams! Well, blog-nerds, I’m excited to tell you that today all your dreams will come true! And by “all” I mean specifically the 800-songs-at-the-same-time-dream, presuming you had it. As for your other dreams, I can’t make any promises, but between you and me, you might want to think about scaling them back a bit. I mean, a professional tennis player? Really? Do you have any idea how difficult that is? Even if you work as hard as you possibly can, there is still like a 90 percent chance you’ll never make it. Beyond that, you’re not even that good. I know that’s not what your coach says, but he’s making $800 bucks a month. Don’t get mad, I’m just being real with you.
In any case, the new Girl Talk album
Feed the Animals is amazing, and should quell any pain you’re experiencing from abandoning all your childhood hopes and dreams. Not sure if 800 songs is the
official count, but it feels like it once Greg Gillis takes to the boards for Girl Talk’s fourth full-length release. No longer classifiable as a mashup artist, Gillis is creating original songs out of the most stripped down elements of other works. Buried within the sonic melange on
Feed the Animals, you’ll find everything from The Beach Boys to The Beastie Boys, often at the same time.
The only criticism of Feed the Animals is that Gillis may have gone too far. The loops fly by at such a breakneck pace that it’s hard to get a grip on what you’re listening to before the samples change and you’re somewhere else entirely. While Girl Talk’s last outing,
Night Ripper, spent a little more time on each composition, things seem a bit rushed on this pass. Even so, with
Feed the Animals Gillis has put forth one of the most original records of the year, and has again proven the validity of his medium.
The album is available for download
here on a pay what you like basis. And don’t be a cheap-ass about it – just think about what you’re saving on tennis lessons.
Mwah!
Reggie.
