Oh, decisions decisions ... what to do at the multiplex this week? There's the new
Shyamalan suicide flick but word on that has been mediocre at best. Or you could go watch the new
Hulk smash the hell out of Yonge Street but between
Ed Norton's public sulk over the treatment of his script and the fact that the
trailers just look sort of shitty I think I'll pass on that as well.
So that rules out this weekends dose of fresh violence. Nowhere left to turn, then, but the sex, and certainly not sex of the
And The City variety. Shudder. No, I'm thinking of something a little closer to home with
Martin Gero's Canuck sex comedyYoung People Fucking -
trailer here - hitting screens tomorrow. The title, here, is a little bit unfortunate as it promises something more exploitative than what the film actually delivers. There's more talking than actual sex in the film but sex there is and all of the talking is, at least, about sex and so I suppose that's fair play, too.
So, other than the breasts - and there are several - what have we got? The film tracks five different couples through the various stages of their night together. There are the exes out on a date; the player looking for a quick score; the best friends; the bored couple; the room mates trying a threesome. Though everybody gets laid everybody's nights end up playing out rather differently and it's the politics of thirty-something sex that Gero's mostly interested in. And he does a pretty solid job of it, too. The different couples will strike home a little differently for everybody but they're generally handled with a decent amount of insight, the performances are strong and - most importantly - when he goes for laughs he actually gets them.
The sex comedy has been the domain of teenage kids for far too long now and what Gero's doing here is trying to take it back, to make a sex comedy for people who have actually had enough sex to have at least the first clue about how it works. It's not brilliant but it's pretty damn good and certainly more wothwhile supporting than the week's big multiplex fare.
