Best Shit You’ve Heard in a Long Time

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 3:55 PM

Rolling into Canada today is Lightspeed Champion, a one-man project that’s the brainchild of American-born Brit Devonte Hynes. The music that comes from this particular project is just deliciously self-aware and ironic enough to not push it into the category of douchebag indie. “Stay the Fuck Away From Me” is my favourite song by Lightspeed Champion, but “Everyone I Know is Listening to Crunk” is another earnest fave from the official 2008 release, Falling Off the Lavender Bridge.

Though the first record was recorded in 2007, Hynes has been particularly prolific, producing an official album and at least four bootleg EPs, one of them being a Green Day cover EP and one being a record he wrote and recorded in one day (aptly named I Wrote and Recorded This in Less Than Five Hours).

The thing that I really enjoy about Hynes, aside from his awesome tunes, is that he keeps a regular (and very candid) blog on his website. In it, he details how he feels about mean MySpace commentary, his current ailments, and he includes a ton of pics he takes on his Macbook. I almost kind of feel like we’re buddies. Check Lightspeed Champion’s MySpace page for some songs to tide you over til you download, ahem, legally purchase the album.

Lightspeed Champion will be performing at:

Montreal, June 10th at Les Saints
Toronto, June 11th at Lee’s Palace
