As If You Needed Another Reason to Hate Hipsters

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 12:28 PM

I wish I could say that hipsters are rarely capable of honest self-reflection, but isn’t that the point of being a hipster? Like, gouging your parents for your trust fund while you wait tables and snort coke and wax poetic on your own unique state of being? Granted, the self-reflection that comes from these moments (I remember a particular raver I once knew studying creative writing at York who perpetually worked on an uninteresting epic poem about his time on ecstasy) is usually not very good.

We can’t all be Hunter S. Thompson, and even if we could, we’d have to know something about politics. Enter Pharrell. A lot of people don’t like Pharrell because he’s cocky and self-important (he and Kanye could have a battle of the egos and there’s no telling who’d win). But he happens to write extremely good songs, which is why everyone wants a piece of him. And it’s why hipsters love him despite themselves. The hipster party photo site of choice, Last Night’s Party, serves as inspiration for N.E.R.D.’s latest video project – EveryoneNose.

Check out the site, watch the video and then check out Last Night’s Party. While I realize 35-year-old Pharrell’s kind of being a dick, taking the piss out of blurring the line between reality and a drug-induced haze, the video is clearly a statement about “the scene.” The song, a watered-down homage to jungle beats and MCs, is quite catchy. It’s  better than a lot of songs on N.E.R.D’s mostly unimpressive last effort, Fly or Die. EveryoneNose serves as a view of the gritty downside of the booty girls that saturate the majority of music videos. We realize as the song progresses that these girls are fucked up beyond belief, which is why they allow themselves to be filmed in ways that border on hipster porn (NSFW). The pictures on EveryoneNose.com extend the story, showing girls posing for pictures, giving each other lapdances and wearing panties on their heads, while they eventually are all replaced by “Removed by Request” images.

It’s interesting and hey, like you needed another reason to look at borderline porn (NSFW). N.E.R.D’s new album, Seeing Sounds, will be released on June 10.
