In journalism, we are taught to disclose our biases. So, here goes: I hate everything that isn’t British. Phew, that feels better, even if I was kind of lying. But look at my track record: I love everything that comes out of the UK. Estelle, wellies, The Kooks, Kate Moss jokes, everything to do with Radiohead and The Arctic Monkeys – all personal faves. Even I can’t deny that despite Amy Winehouse’s erratic and often glue-sniffing-induced behaviour, she makes some good songs. I’m also a supporter of Canadian and American stuff, but as of today, the Brits are kicking our asses.
Case in point, here are two awesome things that I have been made aware of in the past week about British people that confirmed this belief.
#1: Bob Marley - Eclectic Method vMIX
This awesome seven minute clip is basically the awesomest thing I’ve seen about Bob Marley since this. It’s like a fan clip, but without any trace of teenage angst resulting in unrequited love. Don’t get me wrong, I like those too. But seriously, Londoners Eclectic Method make awesome tongue-in-cheek video mashups featuring video clips that wow cooler-than-thou electronic music fans all over the world. Check out their site for more info.
#2: Paper - The Get Out Clause
I quite like this band’s little Britpop ditty, Paper, and the way they filmed their video is ingenious. Because the UK’s Data Protection Act says that you have the right to access all public data concerning yourself, this band played their song in front of several closed circuit cameras around London and requested the video, editing it together into this music video. So clever!
I totally believe in transparency in journalism, which is why I included a clip that disproves everything I just wrote:
#3: Kanye West vs. Jonah Hill – Connect Four
Americans are geniuses too! There are just fewer geniuses to write about from America because most Americans are so shy, they don’t reveal what geniuses they are. It’s because of their n’er spoken of Jante Law. One American that bucks that trend is the ever-egotistical Kanye West, who is known for playing Connect Four with celebrities like Beyonce and Common. But this is a clip of him playing with Jonah Hill, star of Superbad. Go them!
