Well, well. Here we are again on music Tuesday. Now that the sun is shining and the Junos are over with, let’s talk about how old music is the best music ever and there’s no point writing new music.
Covers are all the rage these days. Especially since that whole
Jo Whiley thing at the BBC took hold. Case in point: though there are rare cases where new bands exhibit originality and poignancy, those bands always cover old songs that are awesome anyway. In some cases, new artists even cover other new artists’ songs that came out last month. So, I rounded up some of the most awesome covers of the past little while and inserted links into the following words so that you could listen to them and perhaps legally* procure them for your own.
You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me – She & HimThis classic 1962 Smokey Robinson song is one of my long time favourites. Though The Beatles perform a
famous cover of the song, the new She & Him album features hottie Zooey Deschanel and the ever awesome M. Ward. She & Him’s first album,
Volume One, came out last month and features
this awesome cover.
All That She Wants – The KooksNow, if you’ve ever met me, you know that I love The Kooks. Okay, I lied. But there’s a distinct possibility that you might have an inkling that I love The Kooks. Stay tuned for next Tuesday when I talk all about their new album, Konk. Until then, you can tide yourself over with
a cover of the best song to ever come out in 1993 (it was a slow year), “All That She Wants.” They did the cover as
a tribute to BBC Radio 1. Look out for the
B Spears cover of this tune as well, though it sucks.
Men’s Needs – Kate NashI might’ve been a little harsh about new bands sucking. In fact, there are so many awesome indie bands out there, I don’t have enough time or space to talk about them. The Cribs are such a band and their incredibly catchy single “
Men’s Needs” is great, which is why Ms. Nash took it upon her cute self to
cover it.
Make Out Fall Out Make Up – of MontrealThis song was originally released by Swedish band Love Is All on their 2006 release
Nine Times That Same Song. But of Montreal does such a wonderful cover, I thought I should include it. Check
this blog post for an amazing list that includes every cover of Montreal’s ever done. Amazing.
*Our legal department requires us to mention that. Wink, wink.
