Reggie the Vampire Weekend

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 11:26 AM

Reggie?  On a Tuesday?  Writing about music?  Asking rhetorical questions?  Better believe it, kids.  The blog schedule is out the window this week, which means I’m writing about music on Tuesday rather than my usual confusing drivel on Friday.  Just relax, next week life will be back to normal (though your parents will still sleep in separate beds).

For my first and possibly last ever music post, I’d like to talk about buzz band du jour, Vampire Weekend.  If you’re not familiar with them, you’ve got about three weeks to get on board before they become so big your mom asks if you’ve heard of them.  Formed at Columbia University, they play what they describe as ‘Upper West Side Soweto’ and wear pretentiously oversized scarves.  Think Graceland-era Paul Simon played by the cast of Gossip Girl and you’re in the neighbourhood.

First noticed two years ago by African music blog Benn Loxo Du Taccu, VW have blown up since the release of their self-titled debut in late January.  Their ascension to band-of-the-moment status was complete this past weekend with their appearance on Saturday Night Live (which forced them to cancel four small shows in Florida – God damned sell-outs).

And while they’re destined to end up one of the most over-hyped bands of 2008, they’re actually great, in an instant-appeal, pleasantly poppy sort of way.  Not sure they have the depth of sound to withstand the media typhoon that’s coming (The Strokes ran into the same problem), but they’re a fun and surprisingly self-assured young band, and it’ll be fun to watch them try.

Ahh crap you screwed up my whole week. I thought it was Friday. Thanks a lot! Now I have to get my back waxed twice this week.

I love how in that one song they rhyme Louis Vitton with Raggaeton. Now that is a rhyme for our times. I also really like how in that other song they shout "Hey Hey Hey" kind of like the Ramones.
