Song Appreciation Time: A Change is Gonna Come

Thursday, February 21, 2008 2:51 PM

Not to get all serious on you or anything, but today commemorates the day that Malcolm X was assassinated in NYC in 1965. And, of course, that reminds me of music. Mostly because I write a music blog. Anywho, protest music, especially in the sixties, really meant something. It’s no coincidence that one of my favourite songs of all time was written in by a fellow named Sam Cooke. Some of Cooke’s songs were more popular than "A Change is Gonna Come," but none were better.

"A Change is Gonna Come" was released in 1965, the year after Cooke died at the age of 33. It was his best song, and it called for change at a time when it was desperately needed. Spike Lee used the song is his film Malcolm X. The song, which doesn’t overtly talk about any specific issues, just calls for a general change. Lots of people have connected it to the current Barack Obama campaign as well. The Fugees, Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan have all covered it. It’s quite a beautiful song – take a listen if you get a chance. You can buy the album here.
