TIFF: The End Of The Binge Is Near

Friday, September 14, 2007 9:22 AM

While Reggie and I have been concentrating on gorging ourselves on films at TIFF, it bears mentioning that we also managed to get pretty loaded a couple of times as well. OK, it was just the first two nights for me, but hey, I have a wife and two little goats at home, I can't be out traipsing around town with shifty film types to all hours of the morning!

Giovanni Bellini : The Drunkeness Of NoahThe parties I attended were potent displays of debauchery indeed. The first was on TIFF opening night last Thursday - it was the Young People Fucking post premiere party and in keeping with this theme, THINKfilm rented out Wicked. Wicked is a swingers club on Queen Street West, and it was full of festival types staring at the barely clothed help. I enjoyed several free beers as well as an eyeful of various topless young ladies frolicking in a hot tub and generally prancing about in all their nubile glory. I also enjoyed the fact that the DJ booth was the front half of a late '80's BMW convertible with the turntables on the dash behind the window. I didn't enter any of the dodgy rooms (best described as "fuck chambers") on the second or third floor, but I peaked in long enough to see some hired talent demo-ing the capabilities of the place.

Day two, we headed to the Vice party, featuring the musical stylings of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The lineup was outrageous and the haircuts of the hip young things seeking entry were a sight to behold. After an hour long wait, we gained entry and commenced to pound back the holy grail of the party circuit: free booze! A good half of the music industry in Toronto was there, from music video directors and producers to members of all kinds of aspiring bands. Not to mention all of the blagging media types sucking back free plastic cups of booze like there was no tomorrow: my people. By the time Karen O and her boys took the stage, the audience was well primed and very receptive to the snarly rock that was doled out. I can't remember exactly what Ms. O was wearing but I will say that it involved a bowler hat and some shimmery stuff; I do remember singing along to Maps and thinking that this was all a pretty fine situation. I managed to stumble home by 2:30 or so, much to the annoyance of my gorgeous wife. Suffice it to say, my TIFF 2007 partying career came to an abrupt but sensible end at this point

Luckily, some of our stalwart compadres at FoodTV.ca kept our festive hopes and dreams alive and even managed to come up with some of their own new drink recipes along the way. By this time next year, I will hopefully be allowed back out again! Until then....
