This afternoon, I saw young people fucking at the Varsity theatre.  In the toilet.  The actual bowl.  After that I went into theatre number seven and watched a movie.  The movie was called, Young People Fucking.  Classic.

The movie, like the joke I just made about people having sex in a toilet bowl, was a romantic comedy about the ins and outs of procreating youths with a splash of gross-out humour and boobies.  The movie was considerably longer than the joke, but both were immensely enjoyable.

Director Martin Gero’s (Stargate: Atlantis) feature debut is getting a ton of buzz in the Canada First! programme, and deservedly so.  It opens as a straightforward montage of sexual snapshots - the exes, the newlyweds, the playboy, the best friends and the threesome – but quickly turns into a clever and insightful look at modern relationships.  Following our five couples as they meander through flirting, foreplay and fucking, Gero seems at ease in bringing his excellent cast (including Billable Hour’s Ennis Esmer) on a tour of all things humiliating about taking your clothes off and trying not to laugh.  From painfully stilted dirty-talk (“I’m going to break my dick off in that ass”) to the intrusive world of strap-ons, Fucking will probably make you cringe once or twice, but it always remains honest.

And yes, there’s lots of fucking.  But not like Short-Bus-lots-of-fucking, maybe more like American-Pie-lots-of-fucking.  And it’s all funny-fucking, there’s no sweaty Wild-Orchid-type-shit, so don’t go popping a bone-stabone at this thing.

The fucking, while abundant, never feels forced. Instead it works to prove Gero’s point that relationships, particularly those that involve fucking, are never simple.  And that the clichés are clichés because they actually happen to everybody you know.

His stories are fresh, engaging and revealing, and end surprisingly.  Kind of like the last time you were fucking.  Or the last time you got fucked.
