I Feel Pretty

Album artwork for Circa Survive "Juturna"When I listened to Circa Survive’s Juturna for the first time, I seriously thought it was a 12 year old boy singing.  Maybe 13.  (Give a listen here, especially Stop The Fucking Car.)  And I was like ‘Wow, those emo/pop/punk bands are getting younger and younger.’  But with songs like The Glorious Nose Bleed and Holding Someone’s Hair Back, he must have gone through some crazy experiences at such a young age.  Like, imagine seeing a 12 year old hanging out at your next coke party.  Yeah, crazy.

But, thankfully, Anthony Green isn’t a 12 year old boy.  And Circa Survive isn’t your typical emo/pop/punk band.  Way too much of that stuff right now.  All you need is Pinkerton.

I first thought of Circa Survive as a punk version of early Tool.  Despondent melodic riffs with a very pretty man voice singing songs about addictions, anger, being lost and trying to figure out what is right.  Because the vocals are so innocent sounding, his trials and tribulations affect you just a bit deeper and take you back to a time when you were young and naïve.  Probably with a lower voice.  And you’ve got to give them kudos for referencing Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind, in a number of the songs, like Meeting Me In Montauk.

Anthony Green has a pretty good resume in the music world.  He was the original singer of Saosin, who quit during an early tour basically to start up Circa Survive; he has a few side projects including High And Driving and experimental punk band The Sound Of Animals Fighting; numerous guest vocals and even recently, his own solo work.

The 2nd Circa Survive album, On Letting Go, is slated to come out on May 29, 2007.  Until then here are some more of Anthony Green’s pretty prepubescent vocals:

Circa Survive - Miracle Sun (acoustic)
Circa Survive - Act Apalled (acoustic)
Anthony Green – Stone Hearted Man

heard of Avenged SEvenfold?  i've been listening to one of their albums.  80s style modern metal.  i like it.  gets me pumped.  though i haven't had a chance to absorb the lyrics.  i bet they're stupid though.  awesome guitars and drums.
