For many years, my main occupation revolved around scouring the globe for amazing new directors getting their start shooting short films, music videos and zany Euro TV commercials. As leading age filmmakers ranging from
Michel Gondry to
Alejandro González Iñárritu have proven time and time again, these short clips are the breeding ground for the
next generation of Hollywood innovators. One of my greatest finds was
Nagi Noda, a Japanese fashion designer turned filmmaker whose combo of whacked out art direction and in-camera effects was first applied for Japanese pop star
Yuki. She's made a few more little nuggets of joy since then, a video for
Tiga here, a commercial for
Coca-Cola there.
Her most recent outing is
"She's My Mine," a music video for neo-disco scenesters The Scissor Sisters. The clip seems to be heavily inspired by Toronto's own
Famous People Players, the world famous black light puppet theatre troupe (considering the group toured with
Liberace for a decade, this connection makes perfect sense). It's a sort of slo-mo dinner date battle royale and it is worth the download time, if you like amazing visuals that is. If not go stare at a brick wall or something!
