Lost: The Plot!

Thursday, February 08, 2007 9:48 AM

Juliette - ambiguous ally or foe?It was pretty exciting around the office yesterday as the gang discussed the upcoming return of LOST to the airwaves. There was even a clip show prior to the first new episode in months...and of course there was something of a cliff-hanger when the show signed off last fall. Spinal surgeon Jack was holding Ben, The Others leader hostage, bleeding to death on the operating table, in exchange for the release of recently mated pair Sawyer and Kate. The return of the show brought with it very few answers, with Juliette, the nice (?) blond other lady being the subject of the series of flash backs. She was a fertility researcher in Miami, still working in her cheatin' ex-husband's lab in hopes of getting her sister, played by Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane on Deadwood, the second star of the HBO western recruited for Lost), pregnant. It works, and then some weird dudes come and try and recruit her and it appears she wound up working on the Island, doing something fertility-related that might have something to do with the injections given to Claire's baby when she was kidnapped.

Of course, none of that is explained and Jack yells a lot and Sawyer made a kind of Star Wars reference ("The Wookie Prisoner trick"). Apparently next weeks show goes back to Locke, Desmond, Hurley and company, but if this thing doesn't shape up in the next couple of episodes, I am going back to watching old episodes of The Prisoner. What's the nerd word on Lost?

I have to agree with you this time Goat. I'm waaaay past the point of being intregued and mystified by the island and it's cast of creepy cast-aways. Am firmly now in the "totally annoyed and frustrated" camp. And to think I waited patiently and eagerly for the show's return all this time... for what? Another look at Kate crying in her dirty wet tank top? (Okay, kind of hot, but still...)

The time is ticking on Lost.

The show - once one of TV's most intriguing dramas - has lost much of its energy and is now failing to resonate with even hardcore fans. Sure the midseason hiatus didn't help, but it has more to do with the chopiness and poor quality of Season 3.

There are still WAY too many unresolved storylines. The mysteries behind the Island, the Dharma Project, the monster etc. just keep getting more and more ridiculous and ambiguous. I'm convinced the producers get in a room and say "wouldn't it be cool if we tried this" all the while forgetting about major island mythology they worked so hard to establish in earlier episodes.

There are also far too many characters now and they can't all share 48 minutes of screen time each week. Quality players like John Locke, Said and Hurley - once essential to the show - are now relegated to the odd appearance here and there in some mean-nothing secondary plotline.

I'm beginning to care less and less and the show is in danger of getting removed from my PVR rotation. This is a sort of Stephen Colbert-style "On Notice", if you will. Due to the quality of Seasons 1 & 2, I'm willing to stick with it for the rest of this season before re-evaluating the relationshihp.

In the meantime, hey Lost producers, did you learn nothing from Alias?

Word up on that.  This show has become a joke with no punch-line, but like a joke where the question starts out really funny and you feel like the punch-line is going to be hella good and then as it gets longer and you start wondering if there even is going to be a punch-line you also start thinking that you probably wouldn't understand the punch-line if there even was one.

Like this:

Q: "What do folding chairs and strip-clubs have in common, that those same things also have in common with the ozone lazer depletion that is taking place due to drawn out scientific testing taking place on some stupid island in the south-pacific?"

A:  (At the end of season 7 when nobody's watching) Shampoo!!!  Get it?  No, seriously, get it???

season 3 definitely seems rushed.  it seems like they want to give us a few answers or hints to soothe our souls, but it definitely doesn't have the same feel as the first two seasons.  im not counting them out yet though.  my closet quasi-homoerotic obsession with jack is growing.  why doesnt he want to go back and help the rest?!  why is he so stubborn with the whole kate thing?!  i do have to confess though, i got verklempt when kate spoke to him over the walkie-talkie, quite possibly for the last time.  so dramatic.

at least it will be every week until the end of the season.

I read that the creators are releasing an 'end date' to LOST, so viewers have some sort of context to the show, and get an idea of how many seasons are left. It's probably a result of the frustrations fans are having.

I think Kevin raises a valid point - it is weekly until the end of the season. I will watch, and yes, maybe i will complain. But i am still "in" to lost.

I heard in the final episode it will be revealed that they are not on an Island but in fact at Canada's Wonderland.

I agree that too many questions have been left hanging. They need to answer a few and then can move on to others. Way too many lose ends.  I still love the show but my frustration will give way to indifference eventually. I hope the writers can get back on track with this show.

Formula..

Intro dramatic scene cut to character X's back story - be amazed at how they are oddly connected to character Y - return to high drama scene - throw in a little Fantasy Island - return to high drama - leave viewer hanging again -Rinse and repeat.
