Reggie's Book Club

Sunday, January 07, 2007 10:36 AM

FACT:  Books do taste pretty good, but you can also eat them.  I mean read them.
FACT:  Before you can read them (or eat them) you must buy them.
Of course you could also take them out of a library, but then you can't eat them when you're finished reading.

In any event, there is nothing worse than spending your hard earned money on a book that stinks, and with this in mind I give you:  REGGIE'S BOOK CLUB!! Here's how it works: Once a month I'll find a book that does not stink, and tell you all about it.  You will then go and buy this book (or take it out of a library, if you had a big lunch) and read it and love it.

Everyone's a winner!  Sound good?  Great.  Let's do it.
I Love You More Than You Know by Jonathan Ames

Jonathan Ames, for those unfamiliar, is an American author living in NYC.  He was a celebrated columnist for the New York Press for a number of years and has written novels, short-stories and became a highly regarded story-teller after his one-man-show  became a hit in '99. The title of said show, Oedipussy,  pretty much sums up Ames's style (say it aloud if you don't get it).  This collection of short stories is true to form,  and whether discussing his love of drag-queens, unsightly *** blisters or the uncontrollable urge to *** his pants, he pulls no punches.  Things get a little stomach-turning at times, though he is never trying to gross you out, or even make you laugh, he is just being honest.  Really, really honest.  And his honesty works as a pretty good reminder of how ridiculous life is in the first place.

Like David Sedaris on crack, Ames's stories are full of the freaky folks our parents warned us about.  He embraces life in and all it's oddities, resulting in a hilarious collection that is strangely optimistic in spite of his own admitted frailty.

And at 240 pages, you'll still have room for desert.
