Does that pretentious Mac guy make you wanna run out and buy a PC? Not to worry, the holiday Mac ads might be the last we'll see of him, as there are reports he won't
be returning to the campaign in 2007.
The
Apple ads, staring author and humourist
John Hodgman as the humanized verion of a PC and actor
Justin Long (
Dodgeball,
Jeepers Creepers) as the Mac, attempt to pick up where the "Switch" Mac ads left off in 2002.
Mac sales have
increased since July, and for existing Mac owners the ads reinforce the value of owning
Apple products - yeah good for you! Yet popularity reports
favour the likeable PC guy, finding the Mac dude downright snooty. VH1 created one of many online
parodies mocking Mr. Mac as a self-centered trust-fund baby tool. And if that's the perception of typical Mac users then Apple needed to re-examine that image (funny enough,
Jetta did the opposite by highlighting stereotypes in its recent ad run). The PC guy even farts in the ad Sony
created for its Vaio C Series, now who doesn't love toilet humour? Score one for the PC guy.
There were 17 spots created for this campaign, directed by
Phil Morrison. But I guess as far as choices go, Apple ended up choosing
the PC guy instead (thankfully, Hodgman is a real-life Mac user himself).
